Make a DONATION to Help Keep the Children of Baltimore SAFE!

As part of the host city campaign for the SPAP's First Annual CME Conference, SPAP will be educating the parents and children of Baltimore about accident prevention and first aid at the Port Discovery Children's Museum's health fair on March 6. Unintentional childhood injury is the leading killer of children 14 and under. Motor vehicle accident, drowning, pedestrian injury, fire and/or burn injury, and suffocation are the top five causes of unintentional childhood injury. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were more than six million unintentional injuries to children ages 0 to 14 in 2007 that required care in an emergency room. This equals 12 injuries per minute, nearly all of which are preventable.

Since we only have one day to directly help the children of Baltimore, we would like to continue our support through a donation to Safe Kids Maryland. Safe Kids Maryland (formerly known as the Maryland SAFE KIDS Coalition) is a statewide coalition which exists for the purpose of reducing childhood disabilities and deaths due to unintentional injuries. More information about Safe Kids Maryland and Safe Kids Baltimore can be found at www.safekidsmd.org and www.umm.edu/safekids/index.htm.

Please make a donation to Safe Kids (even if you're not attending conference)! Below are ways to donate:

  • SPAP conference web-site
  • upon on-line registration for SPAP conference
  • if already registered, go back to registration website, sign in and select "Make a Donation"
  • at conference

About the Conference

We are pleased to announce the 1st Annual Society for Physician Assistants in Pediatrics Pediatric CME Conference. The Society for PAs in Pediatrics (SPAP) has had the pleasure of partnering with the Association of Family Practice PAs (AFPPA) for our last 3 CME conferences. This year we are excited to pursue the conference independently. We will be offering 28 CME lecture hours in addition to 4 two-hour hands-on workshops. The conference is scheduled for Friday, March 12th to Sunday, March 14th, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency on the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Maryland.

SPAP's CME conference is a series of seminars focusing on the continuum of care for infants, children, and adolescents with a variety of common medical problems. We have designed the conference schedule to provide lectures and discussion forums on a variety of highly relevant topics ranging from orthopedics, surgical emergencies, cardiac disease, H1N1 update, nutrition, and much more. The invited speaker faculty includes PAs, NPs, and MDs recognized as experts in their medical fields. Medical education is divided into various formats designed to maximize the learning experience for all attendees regardless of their specialty. We encourage attendees that not only practice in general pediatrics or subspecialties to attend, but also those who practice family or emergency medicine in which a large portion of their patient population includes the pediatric age group.

On Friday, March 12th, we will be offering general seminars in the morning followed by breakout sessions in the afternoon. The breakout will include 3 CME hours in the chosen field, "The Adolescent Afternoon" and "Newborn Niche".

Saturday, March 13th, will include 10 CME hours of the general session in addition to simultaneous workshops. The workshops will consist of 2-hour blocks including: Splinting & Casting, Suturing, Radiology Review, and Physical Exam Pearls. The workshops are first come, first serve and will include an additional fee to cover the cost of materials. Participants will be able to sign-up at the time of registration and register on-site if seats are available.

The final day of the program will be offered Sunday morning, March 14th. This will include an additional 5 CME hours of a potpourri of pediatric topics.

At the end of the conference, participants will have a better understanding of the medical topics and be more effective in their health care delivery for sick infants, children and adolescents. Please join us for our inaugural Pediatric CME Conference this spring in Baltimore!
